Plant Grow Lights

A grow light can turn a dark corner into a good home for plants. Learn which type to buy, how far to place it, and how many hours to run it — explained simply.

LED grow lamp shining over potted plants on a desk

Quick answer

For most homes, choose a full-spectrum LED grow light (white light looks nicer than purple and works well for houseplants). Place it roughly 6–24 inches above plants, following the manufacturer’s guidance, and run it for 10–14 hours a day on a timer. Give plants a dark period at night.

If your home is short on sunlight, a grow light is often the most effective upgrade you can make — more effective than any fertilizer or gadget. Modern LED lights are energy-efficient, run cool and come in styles that blend into living spaces.

Types of grow lights

Type Good for Things to know
LED bulbs (screw-in) One or two plants in an existing lamp Easy and cheap; light spreads less evenly
Clip-on or gooseneck lights Desks and single plants Adjustable; often lower power
LED bars and strips Shelves and plant cabinets Even light across a shelf; mount under the shelf above
Panel or pendant lights Plant corners and larger collections More powerful; hang above plants

How to choose a grow light

  • Full spectrum white light suits houseplants and looks natural in a room.
  • Check the coverage area the manufacturer recommends — a small bulb won’t light a whole shelf.
  • Look for a built-in timer or use a plug-in timer for consistency.
  • Adjustable height or dimming makes it easier to avoid scorching leaves.
  • Compare wattage by actual power draw, not “equivalent” wattage claims.

Placement and schedule

  1. Start with the manufacturer’s recommended distance. Low-light plants can sit further away; succulents and fruiting plants closer.
  2. Run 10–14 hours a day for foliage plants. Use a timer.
  3. Watch the leaves. Bleached or crispy patches mean it’s too close or too strong; stretching means it’s too far or too weak.
  4. Adjust watering. Plants under good grow lights grow faster and may need water more often.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a regular LED bulb as a grow light?

A bright household LED placed close to a plant helps a little, but dedicated grow lights produce more usable light for their size. For low-light tolerant plants, a bright daylight LED bulb in a desk lamp can be enough.

Should I leave grow lights on 24 hours a day?

No. Most houseplants do best with a daily dark period. 10–14 hours of light is a good target.
