Plant Care Tools

You don’t need a shed full of gear. These are the few plant care tools that genuinely make indoor gardening easier — and the ones you can skip.

Hands trimming a houseplant with small scissors

Quick answer

The essential houseplant tools are a watering can with a long, narrow spout, sharp pruning snips, a few pots with drainage holes, potting mix and perlite, and a soft cloth for dusting leaves. Nice extras include a moisture meter, a grow light and a hygrometer.

It’s easy to buy gadgets you don’t need. Start with the basics below, then add tools only when you run into a specific problem they solve.

The essentials

  • Long-spout watering can: reaches under leaves and pours slowly so water soaks in instead of splashing.
  • Pruning snips or small scissors: for trimming yellow leaves, leggy vines and taking cuttings. Clean between plants.
  • Pots with drainage holes and saucers: see indoor plant pots.
  • Indoor potting mix and perlite: see potting mix.
  • Soft cloth or duster: clean leaves capture more light.
  • Balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer: for spring and summer feeding.

Helpful extras

Tool Buy it if…
Moisture meter You have large pots or struggle to judge watering
Grow light Your home or office is short on natural light
Hygrometer You grow calatheas, ferns or other humidity lovers
Humidifier Your air is dry and plants show crispy edges
Yellow sticky traps You see fungus gnats — see our guide
Moss pole You grow monstera or other climbers
Plant stand Plants need to be closer to the light

What you can probably skip

  • Leaf shine sprays: can clog leaf pores; a damp cloth does the job.
  • Drainage gravel: doesn’t improve drainage — a hole does.
  • Frequent misters: nice ritual, but they don’t meaningfully raise humidity.
